UNCERTAIN APPS: millions of customer data at risk

Still are app developers careless with user data. A study by the Fraunhofer SIT showed that several million records are at risk in the cloud - for a lax handling of authentication.

Hand coming out of the monitor for typingDevelopers are still storing unprotected preferred secret keys and tokens for access to the cloud storage in their apps. With little effort it can get read. For this criminals can get access to databases such as the Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Facebook. By this way are up to 56 million records compromised, estimates the Fraunhofer Institute for Security in Information Technology (SIT).

Together with the Technical University of Darmstadt and expert from Intel examined the Fraunhofer SIT in an automated process about two million apps in Google Play Store and Apple's App Store. In many has been the simplest form of authentication for access to cloud providers implemented. The developers are probably not aware of how inadequate the information are protected and getting collected by the Apps Data.

Unrestricted access to customer data

In their experiments, the scientists could not only read highly personal information, such as who are friends with whom Facebook or health information, from some app users. Using the secret key actually they could read complete user databases or even could manipulate them.

The report concludes that user cannot become actively protect. You should be careful what app you entrust personal information. Developers, however, should be better informed of the safety precautions of the cloud provider and implement more restrictive access controls in their apps. The researchers have already informed some developers on the most critical vulnerabilities.

Cloud providers have to act

Even with the providers of cloud services is the Fraunhofer SIT in contact. Both, Amazon and Facebooks Parse.com, Google and Apple have been informed of the findings too. The cloud providers also incumbent responsibility to bring the app developers to use not only the most vulnerable authentications. In addition, the cloud provider should make not convenient, but the safest possible standards mandatory.

The problem is not new. Already in June 2014 did researchers of the New York's Columbia University, a similar investigation and covered a distance of thousands of secret access token for Amazon Web Services open. The researchers then criticized that many developers did not follow the recommended conversions when programming their Apps and imbedded secret keys directly into the source code. They are apparently unaware of how simple source code can be translated back. In March 2014 researchers had discovered ten thousands of AWS credentials on Github.

Does SEO - Search Engine Optimization bring traffic to your site?

AlexaTo answer this question we take the service from Alexa, an Amazon company, which got founded 1996. This is the true pioneer in the world of web analytics and got the necessary experience over the years. How their data are collected and have to get interpreted is declared under the menu About Us on the Alexa website:

Alexa's traffic estimates are based on data from our global traffic panel, which is a sample of millions of Internet users using one of over 25,000 different browser extensions. In addition, we gather much of our traffic data from direct sources in the form of sites that have chosen to install the Alexa script on their site and certify their metrics. However, site owners can always choose to keep their certified metrics private.

Our global traffic rank is a measure of how a website is doing relative to all other sites on the web over the past 3 months. The rank is calculated using a proprietary methodology that combines a site's estimated average of daily unique visitors and its estimated number of pageviews over the past 3 months. We provide a similar country-specific ranking, which is a measurement of how a website ranks in a particular country relative to other sites over the past month.

Let us take a look at some actual ranking examples from Alexa (the ranking of the best sites can get found here):

#1 google.com
#2 facebook.com
#3 youtube,com
#15 linkedin.com
#26 bing.com
#109 nytimes.com
#173 forbes.com
#258 google.at
#327 google.com.ph
#1163 heise.de (a IT magazine publisher from Germany)
#1449 orf.at (the Austrian TV station)
#3894 golem.de (IT and gaming online news from Germany)
#5528 krone.at (an Austrian daily newspaper)
#10563 kurier.at (an Austrian daily newspaper)

If you take a look at all this sites, then you see that all this sites have a lot of content. The content is bringing the visitors and the site metrics are getting considered in the search results of the search engines. It does not help you if you make a site, optimize it for a few keywords and think that you get now a lot of traffic. If you have no content on your site, which is interesting for your readers, then they are faster away then they have been coming.

SEO helps you only in starting a website. If you are not bringing new information and make your readers interested, then your website will not perform. In such a case you can create back-links optimize for keywords and result will be that nobody will visit or revisit your site. That gives you a bad ranking and you can start from the beginning again, because you'll lose your ranking in the search engines.

We can see an example about such a result from a Skype communication, which I had today in the morning:

He: We have spent around $7000 for Data itself to run the processes but we went in total loss. So now we are mostly looking for process where the clients give the specific data

Me: The data, which you can buy, are already heavy used by other centers. Responsible for this is the data protection law in the traditional outsourcing countries

He: Yes, we use to get lot of duplicate leads looks like the vendor sale the same data to multiple centers. Just know somebody suggested us to generate our own data with by developing websites and taking SEO Help.

Me: You'll not get enough data from a website to run a call center. There are so many websites, which are never getting visited by someone. Promotion at the good websites will be very expensive. It will be only profitable if the payout very high, but there is another rule: "As higher the offered payout is as less sales will be done."

You can take a look at the ranking of my blog at Alexa and compare it with the unique visitors, which are visiting my blog:

Alexa status about blog.wwpa.com

Yesterday I have started a free service from geovisites.com, which is listing the unique visitors per country. The geovisites are running since yesterday morning. On the right site of geovistes is listed the full day.:

Screenshot GeoVisites.com

Do you thing that one from the 38 US visitors will drop his phone number? If you are lucky then 1 from 1000 will do it. You'll see at Alexa that 18 millions of domains, which are having fewer visitors.

He: yes.. now I understood the equation, it's difficult to achieve. We are currently running a Online Campaign for Drug and alcohol rehab which went online a month ago, and the SEO work was done by a professional still it didn't gave us any inbound call: www.dictionbreakfree.com

Me: Alexa says about dictionbreakfree.com: We don't have enough data to rank this website. You see, the seo work alone brings nothing.

Screenshot of the Alexa report about dictionbreakfree.com

That it is not necessary to register your site at Alexa is showing the example from one of my customer. He made only a website for having one. His customers are property management companies, with he has contracts. For this he made never a SEO or registered his site somewhere. The site weber-haustechnik.at exists already around 20 years. Even this site has a better traffic ranking then the above one with SEO:

Alexa report about weber-haustechnik.at

He: Oh God, i was having high expectations

Me: Seo is only search engine optimization. That alone does not bring visitors.

He: Sir i have found that when i look for process in Google search your blog is listed mostly on first page or second page ... so i think the quality of the articles also plays an important role in driving the traffic.

Me: Sure, the content makes the search engine optimization. Google is using similar data or the data from Alexa too.

He: I was not aware of that. We try to outsource SEO work to freelancers who were taking fewer fees. May be next time we should try with an expert who is good in SEO and content writing

Resume: Forget everything about SEO and tricking the search engines. If you like to get visitors coming to your site, then you have to write quality content about the topic of your website. Everything else is not more than a cat, which is hunting her own tail!.

If you are not permanently adding content to your website, then your website will be soon only a hidden secret in the World Wide Web. If you think you need to add only a few pictures and that is it, then you are wrong. Nobody is searching for pictures and pictures are not getting indexed by the search engines.

Tricking the search engines with optimizing the content for them, bring you only for a short time in front of the result list for the used keywords, but there is no guarantee that it brings you some visitors. As soon as they are changing their indexing algorithm you can get found as the last entry of a search result. Only quality content keeps you permanently in front and brings visitors to your site.

A website is like a store window - if the content does not change it will not attract customers.

Austrian trial: Facebook reproaches Schrems “pseudo-class action”

If the class action lawsuit by 25,000 Facebook users, who are represented by Max Schrems, approved in Vienna in court? That has been the question on Thursday at the beginning of the trial.

Max SchremsOn Thursday, the largest European Data Protection class action was heard on Regional Court for Civil Matters in Vienna in Hall 8. 25,000 Facebook users support the lawsuit, including 3700 Austrians.

At the start of the trial, it was mainly about the competence of the action in Vienna. Facebook denied that the Regional Court in Vienna has the right site to sue the US company. "Facebook has the opinion that they are nowhere actionable. Not in Eire, not in Vienna" explained the lawyer of Max Schrems in his plea that was directed especially to the many media representatives present in the room.

The hype was extreme. Many international journalists were represented. Schrems said: "The media coverage is bizarre. But if less through my activism, but rather caused by the defendant."

Not a "US-style class action"

The Viennese law firm acting for Facebook, called the class action as a "pseudo-class action". "The civil procedure law has no US-style class action, the applicant can go to California, where such methods are permitted." Said the Facebook lawyer Nicholas Pitkowitz in the courtroom from.

"Facebook does not want to be sued. Users do not need to travel to a country where they are not native. The idea of European legislation provides that every consumer can make at his residence claim the right to sue" replied the lawyer from Schrems, Wolfram Proksch.

Reproach: Schrems wants to earn money

The attorneys at Facebook imputed Max Schrems, who represents the Class Members that he is by himself not a consumer. "There is no privacy forum where Schrems is not at the podium," the argument. Reproach: he would make money.

This denies the attorney of Schrems in front of the court. Schrems is living from rental income and a minor job in a company. As evidence he presented the bank statements, as well as the Facebook profile entries that Schrems is making as a consumer. Schrems was still regularly active on Facebook.

Schrems even add at the hearing that he usually do not earn money by privacy panels. "I do not need much in life" said the doctoral student who continues his law degree at the University of Vienna. The question of whether he had ever been thinking to ask for a trade license was laughing denied by Schrems .

Privacy activists

Discussed got also that Schrems is called a "Privacy activists". His answer: "It is politically important to me, to do something for the privacy."

The 500 euros, which will be sought in the context of class action, should also be paid to other consumers. It is therefore not a "debt collection agency," as it Facebook has also accused in the process. The lawyers of Facebook also stiffen on quotes from media reports, on which they intend to nail Schrems.

"Student group"

In front of the court Schrems cleaned up with the myth of the “Vienese student group”. There had been about five friends who have also made a request for information to Facebook. A student group, had never existed. The association "europe-vs-facebook.org" exists. The attorneys at Facebook Schrems also tried to bring him out of concept with leading questions about his "employees".

But according to the lawyers of Facebook is it not possible to assign the rights of consumers to another consumer. The lawyer of Schrems brought the following example: "Just imagine that you have a friend in an EU country and get him a gift from Amazon. However, the product is insufficient. In this case the consumer can also cede claims."

No evidence of capacity

The attorneys at Facebook argued, however, also before the court so that Schrems did not adduce any evidence that proves the "capacity" of the Class represented by him. As these users have agreed to the terms and conditions, they were very well competent.

This Facebook subordinate to its users again "mass insanity" as Schrems already said his opinion on the written statement from Facebook. "For Facebook are their users only a data resource" can get read on Twitter.

Schrems stated at the hearing that he has requested passport or identity cards from all 25,000 class members, which have given a declaration of assignment, to verify the authenticity of their accounts. "These data are on an offline laptop with special hardened Linux operating system," Schrems said. The assignments have been cross-checked.

Also theme has been that Schrems had already introduced during 2011 complaints to the Irish data protection authority and therefore from the perspective of Facebook  Schrems cannot sue in Austria. The attorneys at Facebook saw this as a problem. Schrems claimed to have withdrawn 22 of the 23 complaints already in July 2014.

The survey by the lawyers of Facebook was like an interrogation. Schrems was practically forced to disclose private details of his "friendships". Schrems said, after the hearing: "They have dug every crumb, there is." The lawyers of Facebook already informed before trial to not answer and questions after the first day of the trial.

Schrems was compared to the numerous journalists less taciturn: "I see my chances are good, otherwise I would not do the work myself." He likes to change anything in general and to enforcing all our fundamental rights.  “Will be our data in the future secure? That is the reason for the trial. Not to responsibilities", he referred to the fact that it did not go in the negotiation of content to privacy. "This is the strategy of Facebook, not to talk about data protection." The allegations of Facebook that he wanted to make money have been "totally baseless". "I deserve therefore not one cent."

The Regional Court of Vienna has given both sides three weeks to translate further documents. A decision on the admissibility of the action in Vienna will be given written after six weeks. This decision is likely to be opposed by other instances. Schrems even expects a "long process". "It takes just a long breath."

A translation of a promoted call center campaign at LinkedIn

Recently I found a call center campaign at LinkedIn, which has been looking good at the first view:

LOOKING FOR CENTERS FROM (INDIA, SOUTH AFRICA AND PHILIPPINES)

5 year old Tech Support Company based in Texas looking for "experienced" call centers to outsource our outbound tech support sales. We have centers in India working for us from more then 4 years and generating good profits.

Pay-out from $50 to $185 for per sale.

Analyzing the product:

The product is not really a bad idea. As the company is based in in a small city, with a population of around 40000 people, called Hurst in Texas, the local possibility for offering a computer service has not really a big chance. Remote service and support can be a possible income.

Negative aspects:

  • A remote service works only if the computer is still running and has a connection to the internet

  • It can be only a software service for optimization of the performance, virus removal (as long the virus is not blocking the Internet connection), spyware scan and malware removal.

  • The service is limited to Windows and Office

  • The offered service "Setup a new system" cannot get done from remote. A transport of the computer can result that the computer does not work when it arrives back to the customer. The reason is very simple: From the vibrations during the transport a card or a plug can lose the correct contact. For this is it better for the customer to visit a computer repair center locally.

  • The company exists already nearly 5 years. They are offering 4 different plans for home users and 2 different plans for business use. The monthly rate is with $15.95 the same for all plans. The initial price for home users varies from $195.95 until $349.95 only the contract time is different. At the website is no reason written why someone should make a contract for 3 years for $349.95 initial with additional $15.95 per month instead of a contract for 6 months for $109.95 + $15.95 monthly. The only difference is the initial price. What the benefits of the higher price and the longer contract time are is missing. Maybe they don't know it by themselves. In this case the telemarketer has no arguments to sell a higher priced plan.

  • Compare at Amazon the price of a new computer in the USA with the maintenance plan what the telemarketer should sell: a complete computer set including monitor, keyboard, mouse and Windows 7 is actually at Amazon for $160 (Dell) available. The setup can get done with the help of the Dell Hotline. An argument for the price is in this case really missing.

In sum is the product not really a runner. In the USA is it normally that the monthly price is coming less as longer as the contract is running.

I try now to translate this advertisement for you:

You need to know that the average call center agent in the USA gets $27000/year ($2250/month or $15/hour)..I have simple divided the yearly salary by 12 and the monthly salary by 150 hours like it is in Europe usable. This company is located in Texas, There is the average income for a call center agent even lower. It is there $26000/year, which makes a hourly rate of $14.45

The offered pay out from $50 - $150 per sale is looking at the first view good, but only on the first view.

Let's take the lowest offered commission per sale, which is $50. A one is not really realistic, because for this the arguments for selling it are already missing.

The company would be positive in labor costs if she would sell each 3 hours and 33 minutes one product per agent by having own telemarketers. The company itself does not believe in their own sales possibilities at such a rate. For this they try to find a call center from a low wage country, which even takes the risk of the product. Maybe the call center should even provide the data for the sales.

My opinion is that very good and very experienced agents will be able to sell in average one product per day as long as the marketing of the product will not get improved. If the marketing will reduce the sales price, the pay out per sale will go down too or the company will not be able to survive and pay you.

So centers think about how long can you work for $50. Maybe you sell one product per 10 hours per agent in average. Are you able to survive with this income?

The sentence "We have centers in India working for us from more than 4 years and generating good profits" is only promotion and for this I can say only: "Never trust a statistic which you did not fake by yourself"

The end of AdBlock Plus - Free Services don't have a long lifetime

The greediness and struggle for survive ends each free service.

Maybe two month ago I found out that AdBlock does not block all advertisements and installed another free adblocker (AdGuard). Today I found an article, posted at Android App News with the explanation for this problem:

Web companies depend on ads for revenue, but most of us use AdBlock Plus or uBlock, or some other ad blocking software, to cut down on the ads that we see when we’re online. According to a report from Financial Times, AdBlock Plus is getting paid to let ads through their filters. More specifically the makers of AdBlock Plus, a company called Eyeo, has been accepting money in exchange for whitelisting ads from companies including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon. It kind of defeats the purpose of adblocking if ads can get through, don’t you think?

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard about AdBlock letting ads through in exchange for payment. It was reported back in 2013 that Google had made a deal with Eyeo to let their ads through. Eyeo goes into some detail on their practice of allowing some ads on the adblock.org website. They call them “acceptable” ads. They talk about giving advertisers “the incentive to produce better ads” by blocking obnoxious ads and only letting through the ads that are unobtrusive. The program isn’t mandatory, and users can opt-out by changing some settings to block all ads. The acceptable ad policy doesn’t go into any detail about Eyeo getting paid to let ads slip through, however. It appears that big companies are paying to get their ads through the AdBlock Plus filters.

We don’t have a lot of details about Eyeo’s deals. We aren’t likely to get them. Companies like Google and Microsoft, and who knows who else, are bankrolling AdBlock Plus. Meanwhile, AdBlock Plus isn’t really doing the job that it claims to be doing. At least it’s not doing the job as well as the company would have you believe. This whole thing bugs me. Thankfully, there are other ad blocking options. uBlock is a great browser extension that I switched to months ago. It uses far less system resources and seems to block ads better than AdBlock Plus. This may be because it isn’t being paid off the way AdBlock Plus is.
